Full Steam Ahead - Sheffield Young Carers Set Sail

This Easter holidays, it was “All Aboard” as ten young carers enjoyed an amazing adventure on the Ethel Barge.  The Ethel Trust Community Barge is a local charity, providing boating trips to a community groups.  Safe in the hands of the Trust’s experienced crew, the group set sail from Victoria Quays and leisurely made its way down the canal to Tinsley, taking in all the sights and scenery of the waterways that are normally hidden from view.

Under the watchful eye of the Skipper, the group helped operate the locks so we could sail smoothly through, giving them hands on experience of how canals operate and the chance to work together as a team. They also got the once-in-a-lifetime chance to take turns at steering the boat; a real highlight that they couldn’t wait to tell their families about when they got home.  Some had never been on a boat before so it was really exciting for them and many commented on how relaxing it felt to sail along and watch the world go by.

Young carers are often extremely isolated so having the chance to meet others, try something new and enjoy a fun, physical and relaxing day outdoors was great for their confidence and well-being. On behalf of all the young carers who attended, we'd like to say a HUGE thank you to the team and volunteers at the Ethel Trust Community Barge for such a wonderful day out.
