March Blog - Rock Choir Sheffield

Hello again everyone,

Just like that, March has been and gone – where did the time go?! With Summer around the corner and those Winter months soon to be a distant memory, we thought that this month’s blog would be a great chance to talk about one of our amazing supporters who have just finished their year of fundraising for us – The amazing Rock Choir Sheffield!

Rock Choir chose us to be their Charity of the Year and we were thrilled when they did! In this time, they have done lots of fundraising for us, including two stand out events that I will talk more about.

The first event was a concert in October 2022, which our trustee Sam attended. There were some heartfelt songs sung, including a wonderful rendition of ‘A Thousand Years’. Trustee Sam had the following comment about this event which really sums up the concert perfectly “The Rock Choir… Wow!” The money from this fundraising event went towards our Christmas plans, helping to fund vouchers for young carers to buy themselves a gift of their choice during the season of goodwill.

The second, and more recent event was Rock Choir’s 30 mile walk around Chesterfield canal fundraiser. This walk was done to raise funds for ourselves, as well as Bluebell Wood Hospice and The Grace Cunliffe Foundation between Rock Choirs Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster. The walk was great fun (as you can probably tell by the picture below!) and over £2000 was raised for SYC alone! The group even managed to squeeze some singing in whilst they were approaching the last few miles, despite the mega walk starting to take its toll. The money raised from the walk will be extremely valuable in helping SYC continue to make an impact with young people and families across the city.

Kate, the Choir’s leader, gave this amazing quote when asked about why Rock Choir decided to support SYC:

“Myself and the wonderful members of Sheffield Rock Choir felt we were missing an opportunity at our sessions, performances and events to make a big difference locally for charity. We decided to look into it and found Sheffield Young Carers. We chose Sheffield Young Carers as their ethos is much the same as Rock Choir which is to inspire and be inclusive to all. Rock Choir is a fun way for people to let their hair down and to do something just for them. It offers an escape from the stresses and responsibilities of daily life and we really love that this is very much what Sheffield Young Carers offer to those children and young people too. We are so proud that we are able to offer our support to a local charity that is making such a positive impact within the local community. We can't wait to see how the charity are benefiting from the money we have raised".

So, as you can see, Rock Choir have been fantastic supporters, and we are truly grateful to have received this support for the last 12 months. We want to take this opportunity to thank Rock Choir again for all their fantastic fundraising and overall commitment to supporting young carers and their families from all across Sheffield – It is supporters like yourselves that we couldn’t continue to do our work without! We look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming cheque presentation (don’t worry, there will be photos for our social medias of this!)

Thanks everyone for reading and we’ll see you this time next month for our April blog!

If you’d like to write a blog for our website, we’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re a young carer now, you used to be a young carer yourself, you are supported by a young carer or you want to discuss important topics around young carers, all young carer blogs will be considered. As part of our 25th anniversary celebrations, we want to post at least one blog/vlog once a month, so there is plenty of opportunity to get involved.
