Who we are
Are you... Interested in working with us?
Sheffield Young Carers is a charity set up in 1997. Our work is delivered by both paid staff and volunteers and we work with children and young people from across Sheffield aged 8-21, who are helping to care for a parent or other family member who has physical or mental health issues, a disability or substance misuse issues.
Meet our staff team
Liz Church – Manager
Liz supports all staff to make sure they provide a good service to young carers. Her job is also to work with the organisations that fund us to keep ensure the service keeps going and make links with other agencies that could help young carers.
Laura Selby – Support and Development Worker
Laura eads two social groups for young carers and does one-to-one work with young carers, when extra support is needed. She talks to other agencies to raise awareness about young carers and the issues that affect them and makes links and talks to other agencies about how they might help the young carers they work with.
Steph Platt – Support Worker
Steph leads a social group for 8-12 year olds in South Sheffield.
Denise Anderson – Administrator and Support Worker
Denise does the office work , including the accounts and also leads a social group for 13 - 16 year olds.
Seetal Jassal – Young People’s Worker
Seetal leads all our activity groups for 8-12 year olds and a group for young carers aged 12-21 who want to have more of a say about young carers issues. She also provides one-to-one support for young carers who are new to the project or who need extra support.
Maryam Mahmud - Family Project Worker
Maryam is employed full-time leading the SYC Family Project. This project is aimed specifically at families where there are mental health issues and/or substance misuse issues at home. The project aims to reduce the amount of caring that a young carer does by supporting the person they care for with issues that affect the whole family e.g. debt, housing, benefits, accessing services. Maryam does this by providing one-to-one support and home visits over a 12 week period.
Helen Mather – Fundraising Officer
Helen works part time for Sheffield Young Carers to raise money so that SYC’s work with young carers and their families is able to continue. This involves applying for grants and also encouraging and supporting the Sheffield community to get involved through organising their own fundraising activities.
Volunteers:
We have a great bunch of volunteers who provide amazing support to our project by volunteering at our groups or in various other roles.
