What is a young carer and how do we help them

A young carer is someone aged under 21 who cares for a relative or friend who has physical or mental health issues, a disability or problems with drugs or alcohol.

Young carers provide help by doing things like chores, shopping, helping with hygiene (bathing, getting dressed), giving medication and looking after younger brothers and sisters.

Being a young carer can affect a young person in many ways - they aren’t able to go out much, or able to access the same opportunities as other young people, they might end up getting in trouble for missing school or being distracted.

We aim to support young by increasing their opportunities and improving their health and well being through the offering of one to one support, group activities, respite breaksholidays and support with education, employment and training.

We also work with other agencies such as schools and the health service to ensure that better support is available to young carers in their day to day life.
